Signs Your Sewer Line Is Damaged

A damaged sewer line affects the whole house, not just one fixture.

Several Drains Backing Up at Once

When the toilet, tub and floor drain all slow down together, the problem is in the main sewer line, not a single drain.

Gurgling Toilets & Sewage Smell

Gurgling after you run water, or a sewer smell in the basement or yard, often points to a cracked or sagging pipe.

Tree Roots in the Sewer Line

Clogs that come back weeks after drain cleaning usually mean roots are growing through a joint or crack. Clearing them buys time. Repairing the pipe stops them.

Soggy Yard or a Collapsed Sewer Pipe

Wet patches, sunken soil or extra-green grass over the line can mean a leak or a collapsed sewer pipe.

Sewer Camera Inspection

We feed a waterproof camera through your sewer line from a basement or property-line cleanout. It shows exactly what's wrong, so you pay only for the repair the pipe actually needs.

Book a Camera Inspection
1

Exact Location & Depth

We mark the problem spot above ground, so any digging is small and in the right place.

2

Roots, Cracks, Sags & Collapse

You see the damage yourself and know whether a spot repair will do or the line needs replacing.

3

A Recording You Keep

Handy for insurance claims, home sales and comparing quotes.

Sewer Line Repair or Replacement?

The camera inspection decides it. If most of the pipe is sound, we fix only the damaged section.

Excavated yard during sewer line replacement

Sewer Pipe Repair

  • One crack, break or root entry point
  • Damage limited to a short section
  • The rest of the line is in good shape

Sewer Line Replacement

  • Old clay or cast iron pipe failing in several spots
  • Roots return after every cleaning
  • The pipe has collapsed or sags along its length

Trenchless Sewer Repair

We rebuild the pipe through two small access pits, so your driveway, lawn and trees stay in place. The camera shows whether your line is a good fit.

Pipe Bursting

A new pipe is pulled through the old one, breaking it apart as it goes. You get a brand-new line along the same path.

Best for: badly cracked or worn-out lines

Pipe Lining

A resin-coated liner is cured inside the existing pipe, sealing cracks and joints where roots get in.

Best for: cracks and root entry in a line that hasn't collapsed

Sarnia Sewer Lines: Who's Responsible?

Know the City's rules before you call anyone to clear or repair the line.

1

Your Side vs. the City's

You maintain the sewer lateral from your house to the property line. The City handles the public side, including the main under the road. Blockages from boulevard tree roots are not the City's responsibility.

2

A Property-Line Cleanout Is Required

Owners must have a cleanout of at least 100 mm (4 in.) at the property line, flush with the ground. Without one, the City won't assist with a lateral blockage until it's installed.

3

Call Public Works First

If your sewer backs up, the City asks you to contact City of Sarnia Public Works before the lateral is cleared.

4

Cross-Bore Check Before Clearing

Before mechanical cleaning or water jetting, contact Ontario One Call for a free cross-bore inspection. It confirms no gas line was bored through your sewer pipe.

We Install Property-Line Cleanouts

No cleanout at your property line? We'll install one, so you meet the City's requirement and future blockages are easier to clear.

Sewer Line Repair & Replacement Reviews

★★★★★

"Sewage started backing up through our basement floor drain whenever we used the washing machine. The plumber inspected the main sewer line with a camera and found a serious blockage near the foundation. They cleared the obstruction, repaired a damaged pipe connection and checked that everything was draining properly."

"Our sewer drain kept clogging every few months, even after regular cleaning. A camera inspection showed tree roots entering through an old clay pipe joint. The team explained the damage, removed the roots and replaced the affected section. It was helpful to see the camera footage before deciding on the repair."

"We discovered a collapsed section of sewer pipe beneath our front yard. The plumber located the damaged area using inspection equipment and explained why cleaning alone wouldn't solve it. The crew excavated the necessary section, installed new sewer piping and tested the drainage before backfilling the trench."

★★★★★

"Our older house had a cracked sewer line that was allowing soil into the pipe. The technician showed us the damaged section on the camera monitor and recommended a localized repair instead of replacing the entire line. They exposed the pipe, replaced the broken portion and confirmed the connections were sound."

★★★★★

"We were renovating our basement when the contractor noticed problems with the main sewer connection. The plumbing team inspected the underground line and found several badly offset joints. They discussed the replacement options, installed a new section of PVC sewer pipe and completed a final camera inspection."

★★★★★

"Both bathrooms were draining slowly, and we could smell sewage near the basement cleanout. The plumber inspected the main sewer line and discovered a damaged connection restricting the flow. After repairing the joint and cleaning the line, he ran water through several fixtures to confirm the backup was resolved."

Sewer Line FAQ

Who pays to fix a sewer line in Sarnia?

+

You pay for work on the private lateral, from your house to the property line. The City covers the public side, including the main. The City no longer reimburses plumber fees for lateral blockages, so a camera inspection first shows which side the problem is on.

Do I need a cleanout at the property line?

+

Yes. The City requires a cleanout of at least 100 mm at the property line, flush with the ground. Without one, it won't assist with a lateral blockage. We can install one for you.

Can tree roots in a sewer line be fixed without digging?

+

Often, yes. We clear the roots, and if the pipe hasn't collapsed, pipe lining seals the cracks and joints they grow through. If the line is badly broken, that section has to be replaced.

How do I know if my sewer pipe has collapsed?

+

Several drains backing up at once, a sewage smell, or a sunken patch in the yard are common signs. A sewer camera inspection confirms it and shows exactly where the break is.

Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line?

+

Usually, yes. Replacing a sewer line is plumbing work that normally needs a permit under the Ontario Building Code. In Sarnia, plumbing permits for jobs like backwater valves go to Lambton County, and building permits go to the City. We'll tell you which permit your job needs before work starts.
